A Crafty Gift For Mommy

As we continue to take measures to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus outbreak, many Canadian families are faced with the challenge of trying to keep their kids entertained while at home stuck inside. If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably exhausted your list of ideas for indoor activities to keep your little ones from going stir-crazy. From falling down a few Pinterest rabbit holes looking for inspiration to dusting off every old toy in the playroom, as parents we know you’ll do anything to avoid hearing the dreaded “I’m bored!” from your kids.

With Mother’s Day right around the corner, why not engage your kids in a fun craft time activity and have them make an easy, DIY gift for mom? It’s no surprise that the most special Mother’s Day gifts are the ones that are homemade and from the heart. And an added bonus? They’ll be occupied and entertained, so you can finally squeeze in that bit work, get the house in order, or take some time to find a perfect gift for YOUR mama. That’s what we like to call a win-win!

The recipe below gives you the step-by-step instructions to make an adorable colored rainbow playdough gift for Mom. There is no baking required, and you’ll only need a few simple ingredients, most of which you probably already have stocked in your pantry!

Make sure to clear a space where your kids can get a little messy and craft the day away to their heart’s delight.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of cornstarch
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • Water
  • Food coloring (red, yellow, green, and blue)
  • Essential oil (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Mix a ½ cup of cornstarch, 1 cup baking soda, and ¾ cup water in a pot.

Step 2: Place the pot on the stovetop on medium heat. Stir constantly; soon the mix will start to bubble and within 4-5 minutes take a dough-like shape. Remove from heat.

Step 3: Place the dough on a piece of parchment paper or plate and let it cool down.

Step 4: Knead the dough.

Step 5: Once it’s cool, you can add in 2 drops of essential oil if you like. We used orange for a fresh, citrusy scent.

Step 6: Divide up your dough and mix each piece with a different shade of food colouring.

Step 7: Use popsicle sticks or cookie cutters to cut out shapes or free form with your hands, like this cute rainbow. Let your kids’ imaginations run wild.

Step 8: Have fun with your all-natural play dough!

We hope you enjoyed making this easy-peasy Mother’s Day gift (and that you were able to squeeze in a little bit of me-time while the kiddos were occupied!). Being a mom is no easy feat. Today and every day, the work you do matters and we appreciate you.
