February 10, 2023 Be Your Own Valentine Today and Every Day
It’s February and love is in the air! With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, many of us are getting ready to celebrate: candlelit dinners, flowers, chocolate, gifts, and more. But Valentine’s Day shouldn’t only be about romantic love. This year, why not celebrate all the important relationships in your life—family, friends, colleagues, even pets. And don’t forget the most important one of all: your relationship with yourself. Read on to discover little ways you can practise self-care today (and every day) and show yourself the love you know you deserve.
Why is your relationship with yourself important?
How you relate to yourself will directly impact how you relate to others. According to Psych Central, your relationship with yourself involves “self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-care.” Having a healthy relationship with yourself can improve your mental health, your bonds with others, and even your work productivity. By embracing your strengths and valuing who you are, you will build self-esteem and confidence. Practising self-love, which according to the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation is a “state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological, and spiritual growth,” will allow you to focus on your own happiness, prioritize your needs, and not sacrifice your well-being to please others. But self-love is not a one-size-fits-all approach and can mean different things to different people.
A few ways to practise self-care this Valentine’s Day
For many of us, self-love is about self-care. It means being happy and healthy in our bodies and minds. From eating well to exercising to adopting good sleep habits to focusing on healthy social relationships, self-care allows you to put your best foot forward and better cope with life’s stressors. So, this Valentine’s Day, here are a few ways to celebrate you and show yourself that little bit of extra care.
- Indulge in a spa day
A day of pampering can be just what you need to relax and refuel. Book a massage or create your own DIY spa experience. Light some scented candles, cue up a soothing playlist, run yourself a bubble bath and let the relaxing begin. And with a few drugstore essentials you can easily enjoy a soothing facial, rejuvenating hair mask, or exfoliating peel. Or let your creative juices run wild with a DIY mani pedi. And don’t forget our Magic Bag spa collection featuring heated slippers and aromatherapy face masks. Everything you need for a day of bliss!
- Get moving
If this Valentine’s day has you feeling lonely and blue, why not go to a dance or spin class, head to the yoga studio, or simply go out for a nice long walk? Exercise is a huge mood booster and great for the body, mind, and soul. And after a workout, grab one of our Magic Bag sports gel compresses to speed up recovery and soothe muscles.
- Buy yourself the roses
Are you the type who loves getting flowers on Valentine’s Day? There is no rule that says you can’t gift them to yourself. Plus, fresh flowers always brighten up a room … and a mood. So go ahead, get yourself that bouquet, you deserve it.
- Dress up (or down)
Whether you plan to stay in or go out, putting on an outfit you feel great in can be a real confidence booster. Whether it’s those sexy heels, cute dress or dapper suit, or even your comfiest loungewear, put on the outfit that makes you feel like a million bucks. If comfort is the word of the day, then pair that awesome loungewear ensemble with our soothing eucalyptus or lavender aromatherapy masks for a truly relaxing experience.
- Have a movie night
At the theatre or at home, sit back and let yourself be entertained. From thrillers to action movies to dramas or comedies, escaping into a world of make-believe is the perfect way to unwind. Don’t forget our Magic Bag neck-to-back compress as you settle in for a night of movie watching. And the popcorn of course!
- Go on a date with yourself
Whether it’s exploring your city, hanging out at the bookstore, going on a hike, ordering your favourite take-out, or having a Netflix marathon, spending time on your own is not only important but also a great way to recharge. So go on, invite yourself out and enjoy your own company. And after a day of solo fun, reach for our Magic Bag heating pad to relax and help you doze off to a blissful night of sleep.
- Chat with family and friends
Feeling a tad lonely this Valentine’s Day? Give your friends or family a ring and tell them how grateful you are to have them in your life. Remember, love comes in all shapes and sizes.
- Tell yourself, “I love you”
It might sound corny, but saying “I love you” will remind you how awesome you are. And that you are worthy of love.
This Valentine’s Day focus on what makes you happy. February is the perfect opportunity to start your self-care journey and celebrate the meaningful relationships in your life. Especially the one with yourself. So be kind to yourself and take care, and happy Valentine’s Day.
