If I keep the same color on my ends, do I apply the dye only to my roots?

If your color has not faded nor changed too much over time, you can start by applying the color to your roots and then, when 10-15 minutes are left before rinsing, apply the rest of the color to your ends until the timer is up. 

Vitality’s Pro Tip: To ensure absolute shine, when the timer is up, add a bit of water and lather the color in your hair (as though you were shampooing it) before rinsing completely.
