What is Venous insufficiency:

Circulatory disorder in the veins of the legs, making it difficult for blood to return to the heart.

Malfunction of the valves lead to pooling of blood in the veins, causing an alteration of the wall of the affected veins. 

Venous insufficiency - Symptoms:

  • Pain, heavy legs
  • Cramps
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Feeling of heaviness in legs
  • Varicose and swollen veins
  • Edema (swelling)
  • Phlebitis
  • Ulcers of wounds

Venous insufficiency - Risk factors:

  • Age
  • Heredity
  • Obesity
  • Lack of exercise – Stationary work (sitting/standing)
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal treatments

Prevent leg swelling

  • Perform leg exercises; the movement stimulates blood circulation.

  • Elevate your legs with a pillow while you are sleeping.

  • Limit your consumption of salt to reduce water retention.

  • Wear compression socks or stockings (sold in your local pharmacy).
